Plettenberg Bay is not just a beach lover’s paradise but also a fantastic starting point for some of the most beautiful scenic drives in South Africa. Plett falls into the area of the Cape known as “The Graden Route” so whether you’re in the mood for winding mountain passes, lush forests, or coastline routes with breathtaking ocean views, there’s something here for everyone. At the start of Spring (September) parts of the Cape are covered in indigienous lowers and present a spectacular kaleidoscope of natures colours and textures. Some of the most popular scenic drives around Plettenberg Bay that you definitely don’t want to miss are below.
Garden Route Scenic Drive (N2)
The N2 highway is the famous route that runs through Plettenberg Bay as part of the renowned Garden Route, stretching from Mossel Bay to Storms River. Driving along this route offers sweeping views of the ocean, rolling hills, and dense forests. Head west towards Knysna, a charming town known for its lagoon and waterfront, or take a trip east to the Tsitsikamma National Park where you can explore the rugged coastline or take a walk on the suspension bridge at Storms River Mouth, or even try some adrenaline-pumping activities like ziplining or bungee jumping.
The N2 is notorious for the number of speed cameras so we highly recommend that you keep to the speed limit at all times. You don’t want any nasty surprises when you return the rental car or get back home.
The Garden route road extends from Storms River to Mossel bay, is a little over 200km along the coast. There is an inland option of 300km which takes you through some interesting towns so give yourself a full day if you like to explore a little. Plettenberg Bay sits right in the middle of the Garden route so there are plenty of opportunities to explore the whole of the Garden route over a few days.

R340 to Prince Alfred’s Pass
For a more adventurous drive, the R340 route from Plettenberg Bay to Prince Alfred’s Pass is a hidden gem that takes you deep into the mountains. The pass, designed by the famous road engineer Thomas Bain in the 1800s, is a winding gravel road that offers stunning views of the Outeniqua Mountains, dense forests, and dramatic landscapes. Along the way, you’ll pass through the quaint village of De Vlugt, where you can stop for a coffee or a bite at a rustic local eatery. This drive is perfect for those looking to explore Plett’s natural beauty off the beaten path.
Along the way you will come across local roadside stall or cafe’s that serve some of the local fare like Vetkoek, braai broodjies, preserves and of course biltong. If you have never been treated to a local braai broodjie, do yourself a favour and indulge, you will not regret it.

Robberg Road to Robberg Nature Reserve
This short yet picturesque drive takes you along Robberg Road to the Robberg Nature Reserve, a must-visit for nature lovers. The road itself offers fantastic views of Plettenberg Bay’s beaches and the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Once at the reserve, you can park your car and enjoy one of the scenic hiking trails that offer panoramic views of the coastline, the bay, and, if you’re lucky, some dolphins or seals playing in the waves. Robberg is a magnificent nature reserve where you are able to view seals, sharks and other marine life from the trail high above the ocean.
During whale season you are very likely to see an incredible number of whales and other sea life. This a rare and unique privilege that all who visit the area should experience. Access to the nature reserve closes at 6pm in winter and at 9pm during the summer months but whatever you do in Plettenberg bay, a visit to Robberg nature Reserve is a must.

R102 to Nature’s Valley
Take a leisurely drive along the R102 towards Nature’s Valley, a peaceful hamlet nestled within the Tsitsikamma National Park. This route will take you through indigenous forests, over the Bloukrans Pass, and alongside rugged cliffs with the ocean on one side and mountains on the other. Nature’s Valley is perfect for a picnic, a swim, or a quiet walk along the untouched beaches. The drive itself is a wonderful way to enjoy the diverse flora and fauna of the region.
Natures valley is exactly as it sounds, a have for nature lovers to experience the incredible diversity of plant life, including the endemic species of fynbos. There are around 45 000 different plants that explode with colour and drama during the spring season. With such a diverse floral kingdom comes incredible birdlife and animal life. This is a true nature lovers road trip.

Redford Road Drive to The Crags
If you want to experience a more tranquil countryside drive, take a trip along Redford Road to The Crags, a nearby area known for its wine estates, wildlife sanctuaries, and art galleries. This route meanders through farmland, vineyards, and indigenous forest patches. Stop by for a wine tasting at Bramon Wine Estate, visit the Birds of Eden aviary, or interact with elephants at the Elephant Sanctuary. This route is perfect for those looking to blend scenic beauty with unique experiences.

Keurbooms River Drive
For a scenic riverside experience, drive along Keurbooms River Road. This route offers serene views of the Keurbooms River as it winds through lush forests. You can stop at lookout points, take a boat cruise, or even rent a kayak to explore the river further. The Keurbooms River Nature Reserve is a fantastic spot to immerse yourself in the tranquillity of Plett’s natural environment. Emily Moon River Lodge is built along the banks of the Bitou river which merges with the Keurbooms River at Keurboom Strand, creating the lagoon that is home to a diverse species of fish, fauna and flora, including the rare and magnificent Knysna seahorses.
